| The Dragon Academy: Socratic Education in a Humanistic Community
The Dragon practises Socratic education. By this we mean that students learn through a process of inquiry in small seminars, where the teacher's role is to provoke dialogue more than to deliver information. Each student's voice is recognized, and the tone of discussion is intellectual and inspirational. Though students' work is rigorously evaluated, we encourage them to develop their own projects and we support them in their varying learning styles.
The Dragon is also devoted to museum-based education. Toronto is an enormously rich cultural centre, and Dragon students frequently visit museums and attend operas and plays, activities which flow naturally fromand back intothe curriculum. The city's museums are sources not only of artistic inspiration but of occasions to reflect on history, social norms and design.
Our integrated curriculum means that subjects are connected both by an over-arching theme for each year and by an active investigation of how disciplines evolve over time. Literature, philosophy, history and science develop in relation to each other, not as separate strands. As these connections become explicit, students come to see knowledge in context.
A great school is not a building and its facilities. A great school like The Dragon is a community of learners, built of the efforts and commitment of truly remarkable people. It needs a committed and talented faculty, curious and dedicated students, interested and involved parents. Together we have created a school which is permeated with the spirit of curiosity and collaboration. We invite you to meet our teachers and to read what our students and their parents have to say.
