Diversity at Dragon
Valuing diversity is integral to the educational
mission of The Dragon Academy. Our students are exposed to the diversity which
so enriches Canadian society, and embrace the tolerance and openness so
essential to democracy.
Diversity at The Dragon Academy is explored and valued
in all its forms: diversity of thoughts, beliefs and worldviews, identities and
affiliations, aptitudes and aspirations, races and cultures, genders and
sexualities, experiences and economics both within The Dragon community and the
wider world. Our commitment to diversity has its roots in social justice, and a
progressive belief in the importance of education for democratic citizenship.
We believe our diverse community plays a vital part in our students' academic,
social, and individual growth.

Academic
Diversity supports and enhances a
well-rounded program of study. Exposure to diversity gives students insight
into the worldviews, experiences, and expressions of others through literature,
languages, social science, history, and the arts. Ethical dimensions of science
and applied mathematics benefit from considering diversity. Diverse
perspectives are intrinsic to The Dragon Academy curriculum. Our students are
motivated to ask questions, pursue knowledge, and compare what is learned with
established ideas, advancing rigourous academic inquiry. Diversity facilitates
learning to think critically and creatively. And it nurtures an open mind.
Social
Our dream is of a student body truly
representative of the rich diversity of our country. Our reputation for
academic excellence and respect for the individual has already begun to attract
students across the racial, ethnic, and socio-economic mosaic of Toronto. Our
school community aspires to represent a wide range of countries of origin,
languages spoken at home, and religious practices. Diverse perspectives,
backgrounds and abilities often meet with prejudice. At The Dragon Academy, it
is a matter of principle that everyone have a place at the table of ideas.
Students learn how to listen to each other with humility and civility, to speak
up and intervene against bullying and intolerance, and function as a community
in continuous conversation.
Individual
Diversity contributes to
students' individual identities, offering multiple ways to define themselves
and many paths to discover. Our community makes a place for racial, ethnic,
intellectual, religious, political, cultural, gendered and sexual differences.
Dragon students learn how differences may influence identity, and shape
interactions and enrich communications between and among individuals and
groups. Our students learn through revealing themselves and exploring shared
interests and affiliations.

Fostering the
diversity that we believe enables students to grow academically, socially and
individually requires the participation and support of all members of our
