What are The Dragon’s new Advanced Certificate Programs?

Beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year, secondary school students at The Dragon Academy have the option of electing to complete additional coursework during their term in the Upper School towards earning a specialized certificate in one of three academic areas of study. Each certificate program will be individually crafted to applicant needs and academic capacities, with the final certificate issued upon graduating from The Dragon Academy. Each certificate will require students to complete additional reading and research beyond that expected for core courses required for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

What will be unique about The Dragon’s certificate programs?

Beginning in the 2019-2020 academic year, secondary school students at The Dragon Academy have the option of electing to complete additional coursework during their term in the Upper School towards earning a specialized certificate in one of three academic areas of study. Each certificate program will be individually crafted to applicant needs and academic capacities, with the final certificate issued upon graduating from The Dragon Academy. How many years does it take to earn a certificate?

Grade 11 and Grade 12 students in good academic standing at The Dragon, including newly enrolled students who completed most of their coursework at other secondary schools, will be allowed to select a certificate program. Students can elect to complete certificates across one or both of their last two academic years in The Dragon’s secondary school. For instance, if you enter in Grade 11, and elect to earn a certificate, you would be required to fulfill credit obligations for the certificate over two years, earning a Two-Year Advanced Certificate. If you entered as a Grade 12 student, you would earn a One-Year Advanced Certificate. Though it would be difficult, students could, in some rare cases, complete more than one certificate during their academic years at The Dragon Academy.

What are some courses that I can expect to take within each certificate program?

Certificate-related courses will, in many cases, follow the Ontario secondary school curriculum. For instance, the Philosophy of Science certificate will include the following courses:

  • Biology

  • Physics

  • Computer Science

  • Engineering

  • Robotics

  • Advanced Functions

  • Calculus

  • Grade 11 Functions

  • Philosophy: Questions and Theories

If I transfer to The Dragon from another school in my Grade 11 or Grade 12 year, can I still earn a certificate?

Yes you can. Advanced certificates are designed to appeal to any secondary school student wishing to complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma while significantly upgrading her or his exposure to university level coursework and research activity. Indeed, we would welcome academically advanced students from any school eager to challenge themselves by taking our certificate programs.
